Pumpless Chlorinator

Every once in a while we run into a pool owner who's done something so clever we have to tip our hats before we even get to the repair. This week's winner: a customer who had a pump filter that was damaged, making it so running the pump at all would have drained water straight out the backwash. Instead of just tossing a chlorine tablet in and hoping, they pulled the basket out of the pump, tied it to their floating water thermometer, dropped a tablet inside, and let the whole rig drift around the pool on its own.
Why This Was Smart, Not Just Funny
A chlorine tablet left to sit in one spot does a lot of damage in a small area and almost nothing everywhere else. The water right around the tablet gets hit with a concentrated dose of chlorine, which can bleach or discolor a vinyl liner, while the rest of the pool stays under-sanitized. Pool stores sell floating dispensers for exactly this reason — to keep a tablet moving and distribute chlorine evenly instead of letting it cook one square foot of liner. This customer didn't have one of those on hand, so they built their own out of a pump basket and a thermometer, and it worked on the same principle. That's genuinely good pool chemistry instinct, improvised with parts lying around the yard.
A Fix for the Symptom, Not the Problem
We love seeing this kind of resourcefulness, and it has helped this pool stave off bacteria growth. But a floating basket is a workaround downstream from the real issue: a damaged filter that made running the pump unsafe for the water level. That's a repair worth taking care of, and it's exactly the kind of thing we specialize in identifying. Most filter and plumbing issues like this can be diagnosed and referred out to our licensed partners without draining a single inch of water, because we do our repair work underwater whenever the job allows it. No drain, no refill, no waiting days for the pool to be usable again.
If you've ever had to get creative to keep your pool running while something's broken, that's usually a sign it's time to get it looked at properly.
